The seventh leg of our cycle round the coast began with a return train journey to Harwich, at the north-easterly tip of Essex.
As we happened to be making the journey on 7 July, and also happened to be passing through London at 11am, we inadvertently experienced the capital coming to a standstill for the two minutes' silence of remembrance for the previous year's bomb attacks. The only sound was that of the various air-conditioning systems in the surrounding buildings, and I have never heard Liverpool Street so silent, not even at night – very eerie.
